InterContinental Hotel – Chicago, IL

Having lived in Chicago for almost 20 years, it is always “weird” to have to stay in a hotel when I go back to town. That said, having the opportunity to stay at the Intercontinental Chicago Magnificent Mile replaces that weirdness with anticipation and gratitude. It’s a quaint hotel in the heart of the big city, with great amenities and a location that puts the best of Chicago at your fingertips.

From the moment I stepped into the InterContinental Chicago Magnificent Mile, there’s was surprising sense of personality — not what you typically expect from a big corporate hotel, but rather a quietly refined, almost quaint urban retreat tucked into the heartbeat of downtown. It’s a landmark property in one of the world’s great cities, with warm details and thoughtful spaces that somehow make it feel less like a monolith and more like a well-kept secret. And the pool.

The location is nothing short of spectacular. It’s literally on the Magnificent Mile, meaning you can step outside and be in the heart of Michigan Avenue’s legendary shopping and dining. From luxury boutiques to flagship department stores, the retail paradise is at your feet. And, you’re equally close to the shimmering waters of Lake Michigan, the architectural beauty of the Chicago Riverwalk, and the green expanses of Grant Park. Museums, theaters, and world-class dining are all within walking distance, and the neighborhood’s unique mix of global hotspots and beloved local restaurants and bars means you’re just as likely to find an incredible meal at a tucked-away neighborhood gem as at a celebrated chef’s flagship.

Despite all that energy right outside, the hotel itself feels like a comfortable home base. There’s a Starbucks in the lobby, quite rooms (some with views) to enjoy down time and the staff was fantastic at providing recommendations and reservations nearby.

And then there’s the pool.

This isn’t just another hotel pool. It’s an artfully hand-built tiled sanctuary — the kind of space that instantly makes you slow down. The craftsmanship feels deliberate, tactile, and almost old-world, which perfectly complements the high-rise views outside. Whether you’re taking an early-morning lap or unwinding with a glass of wine after a day of city exploration, it’s the kind of feature that reminds you this place was designed for people, not just reservations. (And yes, I did go up and lap swim to start my day and went back up to the pool to jump in as a way to end the day.)
