Award winning, family-friendly hotel, the Fredericksburg Inn and Suites is located within walking distance to Main Street, in a quaint town that celebrates German heritage and German cuisine.
Traveled to Texas for “Schnitzel”
Fredericksburg, Texas was not the first time I visited a German-Inspired town in the United States. I traveled to The Castle Inn in Helen, GA and was blown away by the food and the authentic cobblestone streets and bright, colorful building facades. I’ve also enjoyed giant-size German pretzels and bratwurst in the Germany pavilion in Disneyworld’s Epcot Center.
When we planned this trip to Fredericksburg, I was looking forward to meeting our longtime friends for a mini-reunion but equally excited for the “Schnitzel.” For those of you unfamiliar with German food, Wiener Schnitzel is a slice of veal pounded very, very thin and then breaded and fried.
About Fredericksburg, Texas
In the middle of Texas Hill Country is Fredericksburg, a small town that blends Texas style with German culture. And while that may sound surprising, it makes sense when you learn that German people came to Fredericksburg in 1846 and there are still limestone buildings from the 1800s on Main Street.
This town was known for speaking in “Texas German” which is a special dialect that’s different from native German. This dialect was spoken in Fredericksburg by the early German settlers who refused to speak English.
The town today, celebrates its German background with cultural events like Oktoberfest. Just the fact that we could enjoy German delicacies in Fredericksburg restaurants, cafes, bakeries, and breweries in town added to the specialness of this visit.
But Fredericksburg is more than German food and beer. The area’s weather is similar to weather in Europe making it the ideal location for making wine! In fact, there are multiple wineries such as one of the oldest, Fall Creek Vineyards.
Fredericksburg is also known as America’s “biggest wildflower farm” because the 200-acre Wildseed Farms, founded in 1983, now grows more wildflower seeds than anywhere in the country.
And speaking of growing, Fredericksburg also grows some of the best sweet peaches in Texas, another result of the special soil and ideal weather.
Peaceful “Retreat-Like” Setting
I already described the beautiful Fredericksburg weather so you can imagine how pleasantly surprised we were to drive up to the grounds of the Fredericksburg Inn & Suites, five gorgeous acres of lush landscape along Barons Creek.
Although it’s located just off the Main Street in historic downtown Fredericksburg where you’ll find dozens and dozens of shops, the atmosphere of this local family-friendly inn blends rustic Hill Country charm with modern comforts and amenities for a relaxed stay.
It’s not like any standard chain hotel. It’s a 4+-star, Travelers’ Choice Award-winning quaint inn that is affordable ($135 average nightly rate) yet with an upgraded experience and country-like setting.
Hotel Amenities
Let’s get right to the amenities that we loved.
There’s an open-air stone gazebo with a fireplace and television, two heated pools, in-ground hot tub, waterslide, picnic area, 2 gas firepits, and more. The entire area is very well maintained and friendly staff makes it such a welcoming environment.
One of our favorite parts of the property was the pool area. The landscaping was beautiful. The pool furniture looked brand new. The pool was heated and featured a slide and volleyball net. Us older folks were happy to just unwind in the hot tub and chat with our friends.
We enjoyed the hotel’s peaceful, scenic setting that feels like a private retreat. Relaxing in the garden, unwinding in the great little secluded areas around the property, it was the perfect way to unplug from our mobile devices and breath the fresh air.
The inn offered other appreciated guest amenities like a 24-hour check-in along with free parking, free Wi-Fi, coffee and tea in the common area, and free breakfast.
The complimentary self-serve breakfast buffet offered delicious eggs, bacon, biscuits and gravy, breakfast potatoes, and more. The area it was served in reminded me of a historical old-fashioned kitchen.
Throughout our stay, we marveled at how the Fredericksburg Inn & Suites would make for a great place to have a wedding or even a business conference.
But despite the fact that we loved the inn’s amenities, the staff (from breakfast workers up to management) really brought the experience to a higher level. Each team member was kind and provided an extra dose of politeness that created a welcoming environment from check in to check out.
Accommodations: Beautiful and Relaxing
The Fredericksburg Inn & Suites features 103 guest rooms arranged over 2 floors. The peaceful outdoor setting was thoughtfully brought inside as the newly refurbished accommodations blend rustic warmth with contemporary style and it was the epitome of comfortable.
We had a charming King Bed Creekside view room, spotless and offering everything we needed for 3-night great stay. The bed was covered with a soft, crisp white comforter, which made it easy to unwind after long days of sightseeing. A flat-screen cable TV and Wi-Fi are provided in each room along with a microwave, small refrigerator, and a coffee maker.
It’s always nice to stay in a homey hotel that still offers housekeeping and complimentary toiletries. There are too many hotels these days that remove much appreciated amenities and lose the “home away from home” atmosphere. The Fredericksburg Inn & Suites really knows how to make guests feel at home.
Important note: This property does NOT have elevators.
German Food in Fredericksburg
Walk around Fredericksburg and you’ll smell the aroma of baked goods and German cuisine right on Main Street.
The Old German Bakery and Restaurant was recommended for lunch and the GIANT, $16.00 salted pretzel served with Dusseldorf mustard and Alstadt beer cheese was just a starter!
We shared two entrees; Sauerbraten and the Bratwurst Plate both served with German pan fries – tasted as good as they sound. The food is served in huge portions! Grab some treats from the bakery like the Bavarian cream pastries on the way out. You’ll thank me later.
Otto’s German Bistro is where we had our first fix for “Schnitzel” … Pork Schnitzel Au Gratin … and it did not disappoint! The potato pancakes were also a showstopper. Equally impressive is the black forest cake that I’m still craving weeks later.
However, Der Lindenbaum, is a must-eat-at-restaurant that feels like you’re eating in Germany. In fact, the facade is exactly how I would describe a nostalgic German limestone building. Not surprising, as it’s said to have been built by German pioneers who founded Fredericksburg 100+ years ago. More schnitzel (Weiner Schnitzel) and German desserts (apple strudel) for us.
Top Attractions in Fredericksburg
The Fredericksburg Inn & Suites is located just blocks from historic Main Street’s shops, restaurants, and art galleries. From local wineries (Cross Mountain Vineyards and English Newsome Cellars) to the cutest unique boutiques, scenic walking trails, and historical and cultural landmarks, Fredericksburg is a town we could visit over and over again.
Here are some attractions we visited:
Enchanted Rock
We were so glad that it was recommended that we drive the 17 miles to see the Enchanted Rock, a huge (425 feet approx.) pink granite dome that’s said to be more than one billion years old. Native Americans deemed the rock to be magical because it made strange sounds and occasionally glowed. This area is also great for stargazing among stunning 360-degree views of Texas Hill Country.
National Museum of the Pacific War
Right in downtown Fredericksburg on a six-acre complex, this museum featured exhibits in the Admiral Nimitz Gallery and George H.W. Bush Gallery, the serene Japanese Garden of Peace, and an outdoor combat zone with real tanks and aircraft. The personal items from soldiers such as uniforms and weapons was a big “wow” from us history nerds.
LBJ State Park
As if the hotel wasn’t a peaceful setting enough, the LBJ State Park, a homage to President Lyndon B Johnson’s legacy, was another peaceful escape blending nature with history. We walked the trails, filled with historical facts about LBJ, and even viewed wildlife in the distance.
Takeaways/Final Thoughts About the Hotel
If you’re planning to visit Fredericksburg, Texas, consider staying at the Fredericksburg Inn & Suites over any other chain hotel. The price was right. The free breakfast was tasty and the room was clean and comfortable. Everyone was so kind. We can’t wait to visit again with our friends for another mini-reunion in the future.
